Showcases advancements in rapid, onsite PFAS detection
During the Seventh International Symposium on Bioremediation and Environmental Biotechnology, Scott Witte, PhD, senior scientist at Salvus, shared progress the team has made in advancing the sensitivity and consistency levels of PFAS detection with its Salvus™ Detection Platform. Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) have been widely used in industrial and commercial applications for more than six decades. Due to their unique chemical properties, these compounds are highly resistant to degradation, leading to persistent environmental contamination.
Witte presented the poster titled “Rapid PFAS Sensor: A Novel and Critical Tool in Rapid Site Characterization and PFAS Remediation” that highlighted recent data results showing detection of PFAS across various environmental media, such as groundwater and leachate, down to low parts per billion (ppb) levels within one hour. Additionally, the Salvus team discussed how a streamlined sample preparation method enhances detection capabilities, enabling the device to achieve parts per trillion (ppt) sensitivity even in complex matrices.
“We’ve been able to conduct these tests to compare our technology to the gold standard of EPA Method 1633 because of the collaboration we’ve received from the industry,” said Andre Tatar, general manager of Salvus. “Companies and organizations have sent us samples to test, and our Salvus Detection Platform is showing we are currently within the target 30-50 percent variation from the gold standard. And our results are consistent, which is what the folks we spoke to are most focused on. The positive reception to our current capabilities confirmed the platform is already positioned to deliver real value to end users in the PFAS space.”
For Witte, the conversations affirmed his work in continuing to refine the sample preparation process. “I see the next three months as critical to our progress in fine-tuning our sample preparation process. We want to reach our ppt goals while streamlining the time it takes to prepare the samples so we can help the user see results even faster,” Witte said. “Continuing to receive field samples from industry collaborators to test and benchmark against the gold standard is one step. We are also eager to conduct field trials to validate our technology in real-world environments.”
