Salvus PFAS Screening Platform Demonstrated Field-Deployable Capabilities during Battelle Chlorinated Conference
The Salvus™ team had a busy week during the Battelle Chlorinated Conference, June 1-4, highlighting recent developments with the Salvus Detection Platform during poster and Learning Lab sessions. Since earlier this year, Salvus, LLC, a CJB Company, has cleared several hurdles to fast track the commercialization of its field-deployable long-chain PFAS screening platform. Scott Witte, PhD, senior scientist, and Andre Tatar, general manager, presented a poster highlighting the advancements in the Salvus screening capabilities and a Learning Lab session demonstrating how the Salvus PFAS Screening Platform can be used in the field.
Poster: Validating real-time PFAS detection with the portable Salvus Analyzer
During the poster session, “Development and Field Validation of a Portable Sensor for Real-Time PFAS Detection in Environmental Samples,” Scott shared information about the development and field validation of our portable, rapid PFAS sensor designed for on-site environmental screening. The Salvus Analyzer is the base technology, using interferometry to detect the presence and levels of long-chain (C6+) PFAS.
Performance of the Salvus Analyzer was benchmarked against the EPA 1633 method using samples collected from groundwater, wastewater, AFFF rinsate, and leachate. The Salvus technology can detect PFAS compounds with six or more carbon atoms, including regulated species such as PFOS and PFOA. Pairing the Salvus Analyzer with the Salvus Automated Sample Preparation Unit enables 500 ppt detection with the concentrated sample.
The Salvus PFAS Screening Platform represents our field-deployable product. It integrates the Salvus Automated Sample Preparation Unit, which cleans and concentrates the sample, and the Salvus Automated Testing Module, which analyzes the sample and delivers results on site. Since last fall, we’ve been engaging industry collaborators to run field validation pilots across landfill leachate, groundwater, and AFFF rinsate. Results of these trials also were included in the poster.
“We’re excited by the progress our team has made over the past year, making significant advancements in the sensitivity and functionality of the Salvus Detection Platform and field-deployable Salvus PFAS Screening Platform. We look forward to continued validation through our field-testing program, which includes joining industry partners on site to demonstrate the utility of our Salvus PFAS Screening Platform within their operations,” Scott said.
Learning Lab: Demonstrating on-site PFAS sample preparation and analysis with the Salvus PFAS Screening Platform
The Learning Lab environment offered the opportunity to provide attendees with live technology demonstrations. During the Salvus Learning Lab session, “Demonstrating the Use of an On-Site PFAS Screening Sensor,” Scott and Andre teamed up to not only explain the science behind the technology, supported by performance data, but also to showcase the simplicity of setting up the complete, field-deployable workflow.
The simulated demonstration of the Salvus PFAS Screening Platform included setting up the Salvus Automated Sample Preparation Unit to show how it extracts and concentrates PFAS compounds from the sample with minimal operator input.
“The Battelle Chlorinated Conference presented an excellent opportunity for us to showcase the progress we’ve made over the past year in bringing portable, rapid PFAS screening technology to the field. We’re thrilled that our Salvus PFAS Screening Platform can enable more timely decisions in site characterizations and plume mapping, as well as real-time process control in PFAS capture and destruction operations,” Andre commented.
